A Massapequa man was arrested Thursday morning after his car struck a man and his dog and he allegedly fled the scene, police said.

According to cops, Robert Michaels, 42, of Old Bethpage, was walking his dog southbound on Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage when he was struck by a 2013 Dodge Avenger. The operator of the vehicle fled the scene without stopping.

Michaels was transported to Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. His dog was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the vehicle, Matthew Johnstone, 37, of Massapequa, returned to the scene and was arrested without incident, cops said. He's charged with leaving the scene of an incident and his arraignment is scheduled for Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.

This is a breaking news story and Patch will provide more information as it's made available.

Is this the same Matthew Johnstone that was a Physical Education teacher in East Islip that resigned and surrendered his teaching certificate and permanently waived his right to ever apply for any new state teaching or administrative certificates? If so, how did that $40 million lawsuit against him and the school district turn out?
