Eagle Statue Fixed

Satue vandalized at Legion hall replaced in time for July 4th.

Two American Bald Eagle statues are once again proudly perched in front of American Legion Post 1066.

The eagles were vandalized early Friday morning, sparking outrage that America's national symbol was defaced just days before the July 4th holiday.

But some hard work and generosity put them back in place in time for the Independence Day celebration.

"It's all done," said post commander Jack Hipp right before the start of Massapequa Park's July Fourth parade.

One of the statues was smashed to pieces, but it was replaced by a contractor who asked to remain anonymous, according to Hipp.

"Fortunately, we had a spare eagle. They worked into the night because they promised to get it done in time for today," he said.

Hipp said that several people have also come forward and offered to help take care of the costs of replacing the statue that was broken and repairing one that was moved off its pedestal during the incident.

A witness on the LIRR platform across from the post saw two men vandalizing the statues before fleeing on foot north near Parkside Boulevard.

Hipp said the police are "conducting a thorough investigation."
