Fire Evacuates Sunrise Highway Friendly's

Despite lunchtime crowd, nobody hurt in Massapequa Park blaze.

Lunch hour patrons at the on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa Park were forced to evacuate the restaurant Friday because of a small fire, authorities said.

"It was crowded, about 120 people," an employee of the popular chain said.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze, according to Massapequa fire officials.

It started on the roof of the building at 1:30 p.m. 

"The smoke came through the vents," said Phil Sunitti, a manager with the chain. "Everything went the way it was supposed to.  The alarms went off."

The fire was put out in about 30 minutes. Friendly's will likely be closed until it passes inspection, officials said.

Some work was being done on the roof of the building at the time the fire broke out, but the cause was still under investigation.
