Fire Guts Massapequa Home

A fire broke out in a Garfield Place home Sunday and rendered it unlivable.

The Massapequa Fire Department responded at 7:30 p.m. for a kitchen fire in a High Ranch home. Two people inside the home self-evacuated prior to responders' arrival.

It took about 30 minutes and 50 firefighters to extinguish the blaze, and nobody was injured. According to Massapequa Fire Chief Stephen Daresta, the fire did extensive damage to the home.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but it's believed that the fire may have been caused by something cooking on top of a hot stove.
