Good Samaritan Saves Driver on Southern State

Man with fire extinguisher helps free driver after crash.

A quick thinking motorist on the Southern State Parkway helped save a man who was trapped in a car that caught fire in North Massapequa Monday morning, state police said.

Miraculously, the man escaped with only a broken ankle.

A Jeep Cherokee driven by Allen Jenkins, 55, of Farmingdale was heading east on the parkway  near the Bethpage Parkway exit just after 9:30 a.m. when he went off the road and struck a pole.

Jenkins could not get out of the Jeep, when it caught fire. Fortunately, Pablo Lopez, who was driving by the scene had a fire extinguisher in his car.

He hlped put out the blaze and authorities had Jenkins airlifted to Nassau Universiy Medical Center.

The cause of the crash was not immediately released.
