Keeping Area Teens Safe

Massapequa has seen two robberies victimizing teens in the past month. What can we do to keep them safer

It's been a frightening month for some area teens and a worrisome month for the parents of teens.

On Saturday, police said two teenage boys were jumped  by a gang of robbers on Merrick Road, who stole a backpack, an iPhone and a wallet, police said. One of the teens was punched but refused medical attention.

On July 19, two teenage girls were robbed at gunpoint in North Massapequa. They were not hurt, but the thieves took their backpacks, cell phones and our wallets.

Both of these robberies took place in the early morning hours, a time when anybody should exercise caution. But at the same time, residents should be  should be safe at all times.

What can we do to keep teens safer?   Should parents limit how late they stay out, even though it's summer? Is there anything the police and government can do? What other ideas do you have?
