Kitchen Fire in East Massapequa

Nobody hurt as firefighters rescue dog from home.

Firefighters rescued a house pet from a smoky apartment Wednesday afternoon.

The blaze at the two story home on Melrose Avenue broke out in a kitchen on the first strory of the home at about 2 p.m., Massapequa Fire officials said.

"I saw smoke and I called [911] said Scott Luris, who lives in the neighborhood.

Luris knew nobody was home, but that a dog had been left in the apartment. 

"I told them to bust the door down because there was a dog inside," he said.  "I would have done it myself, but the firefighters came quickly."

Firefighters were able to get the dog out of the home and put the blaze out in 15 minutes. 

Neighbors put the dog, named "Toby" on a leash, and held onto himuntil the owner came home.
