Mall Fire Leads to Arson and Burglary Arrest

Massapequa man arrested in June incident.

A Massapequa man who worked at a Sunrise Mall shop, set fire to a clothing rack to hide the fact that he stole from the store's cash register, Nassau County police said.

Denzel Jones, 23, was arrested Tuesday for the June 30 incident. Jones was employed as a stockperson at Forever 21. On the night of the fire, Jones allegedly hid in the stockroom bathroom at closing time.

He waited until other employees secured the store an left, police said. Then he allegedly took cash from the register and set the fire. He fled through a rear door, setting off a burglar alarm.  

Jones was picked up in Staten Island after  surveillance camera revealed the crime, police said,

He was charged with arson, burglary, and reckless endangerment.
