Update: Suspicious Package Forces Broadlawn Manor Evacuation

Nassau Police cordon off condo community due to suspicious UPS package.

Odor from a package in a United Parcel Service truck Thursday morning set off a chain of events leading Nassau County police to evacuate nearby residents at The Oaks at Broadlawn Manor, a condominium community located on County Line Road and Sunrise Highway.

Officer James Imperiale said police responded quickly to the possible threat to public safety after the UPS driver called 911.

The UPS driver detected what he thought was a foul odor or smoke and  Seventh Precinct Police, the Nassau police Emergency Services Unit,Arson/Bomb Squad, all responded to the scene as did members of the Massapequa, Levittown and Wantagh Fire Departments as well as the Fire Marshall Office.

Police cordoned off the UPS truck with cruisers and emergency vehicles, blocking it within a designated safe zone until a possible threat has been ruled out.

Local traffic has been detoured around Broadlawn Manor as a precautionary measure. County Line Road north of Sunrise Highway was closed for several hours.

It was determined that there was no gas, radiation or heat coming from the packages, nor were there any explosives.  

One Levittown firefighter was hospitalized with elevated blood pressure during the incident, but there were no other injuries. 

Police said there was no criminality in the case and returned the truck to UPS.
