POLL: Is Enough Being Done to Combat Heroin on Long Island?

Heroin abuse is rising across the country.

Multiple reports of heroin overdoses and possession arrests surfaced in recent weeks on Long Island as New York State officials announced plans for a statewide plan to combat the drug.

Five overdose victims were revived using the emergency drug Narcan within the past month in Nassau County alone. On May 22, a 29-year-old had to be revived at a Massapequa emergency medical center. Two days later, an 18-year-old man was revived in Wantagh. On June 11, a 26-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman were revived in Merrick with the treatment. Most recently, a 48-year-old woman was revived in Massapequa Park Saturday after an overdose, cops said.

Communities were surprised when a Long Island teacher was arrested for heroin possession during a routine traffic stop.

State officials, addressing the growing trend of heroin use and abuse across the country, are instituting college educational programs, boosting patrols, and granting better access to Narcan to battle the drug.
