The four-day search for a Massapequa resident who had while swimming at Jones Beach was called off Wednesday night after authorities were alerted that he was alive nearly 800 miles to the south in Florida.

Raymond Roth went with his son to Field 6 at Jones Beach for a swim Saturday afternoon. By 3:30 p.m., Roth's son reported his father missing.

A four-day search by the Coast Guard and Nassau County Police yielded no results for the the 48-year-old Massapequa resident.

According to Newsday, Roth's brother contacted police and told them that Roth had reached out to him from Florida.

Duignan said Florida authorities went to the location where the brother said Roth was staying, but have not made contact with him as of Wednesday night.

The search was called off at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Duignan told Newsday.

Nassau County Police had not confirmed that Roth had been located as of 2 a.m. Thursday.

A 4 day search with HOW MANY PEOPLE LOOKING ? I'd say 100 Grand a day is probably a fair assessment, , , ,

I was there that day and saw the tremendous amount of manpower that went into the search with lifeguards, coast guard, helicopters, scuba divers. What was strange is that the family was extremely calm and joking when I saw them at field six. The lifeguards at the beach are very vigilent and no one saw him enter the water. There was speculation even a few days ago about an insurance scam.So many people risked their lives. This man should be put in jail for life. Those lifeguards all felt terrible that they lost someone at sea when all along it was a hoax.To make matters worse a family member came to the guard station the next day to complain about the lifeguards. I am glad the truth came out and I am so grateful for the committed efforts of the lifeguards. They are truly the guardians of the sea.

If he repays that money can it go towards the Youth Programs that lost funding! Or maybe to give one of the many people who got laid off their job back! What a terrible thing to do but even worse when we're in such a financial hole.

Wait- how did he wind up near Florida??
Ed August 02, 2012 at 12:47 PM
He and his family should all have to pay for the cost of the search. They family should also be arrested for filing a phony police report.

Not to mention the idiot left his child on the beach.

The whole story was fishy from the very beginning and once all the facts are flushed out any adult family member, if complicit in a hoax, needs to be arrested and forced to pay back the enormous expense. That means seek a lien on all their property!

That is crazy to leave your son, and make him think that u Drowned. What an idiot. And to make all these people search for you. He should pay back the County! If he wanted to leave couldn't he just left his house and say i'm going to get milk..... His poor Child, that's who I feel bad for.

His child was 22 years old and in on the plot. The wife couldn't even wait a week without running to lawyers to get a lawsuit going without even a body. They are all crooks.
