School Bus Driver Accused of DWAI

Girl slightly injured as vehicle backs into tree on DNA Learning Center visit.

A bus driver from Massapequa was arrested on charges of driving while ability impaired after he crashed a school bus during a field trip in Cold Spring Harbor.

James Sommer was driving a school bus carrying 29 Plainedge Middle School seventh graders and a teacher to the DNA Learning Center, part of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, when he attempted to park the bus and backed into a tree limb. A 12-year-old girl was taken to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries.

Sommer, 47, of 248 North Beech St., Massapequa, was charged by Suffolk County Police with aggravated driving while ability impaired while operating a school bus.

The school bus was impounded. Sommer will be held overnight at the Second Precinct for his arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Plainedge Schools Superintendent Edward A. Salina, Jr. said: "Earlier today, one of our district buses transporting 29 seventh-grade middle school students to a field trip was involved in an accident. The teacher chaperone on board immediately notified the building principal. Local police were contacted and responded to the scene. The Plainedge Middle School Principal, District Transportation Supervisor and Assistant to the Superintendent for Facilities and Special Projects arrived to assess the situation and ensure student safety. District administrators contacted the parents of each student on the bus. One student, at the request of the parents, was transported to the hospital and later released.Suffolk County Police took the driver into custody and is currently conducting an investigation. The district is fully cooperating with the local authorities. The district will take appropriate action based on the outcome of an investigation."

Correction: Suffolk Police have amended the initial charges and say, "The investigation is continuing and additional charges may be filed."

Alcohol is a drug. Alcohol is glamorized in this society. It's cool to drink, that's what the beer ads on TV show, that's what it seems like in the music videos. That's the message our kids get, then they come home and see Mommy and Daddy drinking, so they guess its OK to do so too. Then you turn on the news and see a police office killed doing his job and a car full of 17 and 18 year olds all dead because of drinking and driving. But they sell beer at the local supermarket, so when Im 21 I can buy it, its legal, right? The only way this will ever change is if PARENTS act as an example. This man had blatant disreguard for our children , he got behind the wheel of a school bus full of kids and didn't care what happened. This is a malicious crime, he knew what could possibly happened and he didn't care. Thank God no one was seriously hurt! He needs to be punished harshly so maybe the next school bus driver thinks twice before getting behind the wheel and hurting someone.

My son was on that bus and thank god he didnt get hurt. Who is drunk at 10 am?? was he drinking during the ride??? These are all questions that should be investigated. The bus driver is also a retired NYPD Sergeant which the article never stated. This guy deserves to have the book thrown at him. If my son got hurt because of him i would not be able to control myself.

This is very sad and unnesscesary especially since he is a dad of 3 children himself. He should know better. Shame on him. The school districts are going to have to start breath testing the drivers in the morning and the afternoon before the pick up our children. It is up to the school district to keep our kids safe.

Did they say he was drinking? The article said ability impaired. What exactly does that mean?
mel October 23, 2012 at 03:44 am
I really think that it is wrong that they publish his address.

I think having breath testing the drivers is a good idea before and after school, it would stop some of these problems that we have now. Who knows how long he was drinking before the trip? He should be ashamed of himself and already has forgotten that he was a former police officer and wore a badge.

Its time the Plainedge school district starting paying more attention to what goes on at that bus compound behind the high school. The driver had to punch in get the keys to the bus and a run sheet did all the employees who hang out there not notice his eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol according to the police--maybe if they were doing the job they get paid to do this may not have happened

It's a great idea that they published his address. He was driving kids from his own neighborhood while drinking bourbon. You should be more concerned about the children than his privacy. Maybe if your child was on bus you would feel different. There is no excuse for what he did period.

They should publish his address. What he did was unforgivable He took 29 of his neighbors kids including mine and put their lives at risk by drinking while driving. This is what you focus on that they gave out his address.....r u kidding me???seriously...worry about the children who were hurt and the others who were scared not about this drunks privacy...

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
