Seal Spotted at TOBAY Beach

Marine biologists say mammal appears unharmed

Concerns about a seal that was spotted by several fishermen in the area of TOBAY Beach Thursday night, appear to be unfounded, authorities said.

Police were called to the beach at ablout 7:15 p.m. and found the four-foot gray seal about 600-feet from the beach's main pavilion.

It was not injured and did not appear to be in any distress.

Police called the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Reseach and Preservation, an organization dedicated to protecting marine mammals, to monitor the seal.

A member of the organization told police the seal was last heading toward the water and is believed to be back in the ocean.

Police said that the seal is healthy and should be left alone if spotted again.
