South Farmingdale Fire Department Planning 9/11 Memorial

Department hopes to acquire World Trade Center steel for exhibit.

The South Farmingdale Fire Department is exploring plans to open a 9/11 memorial at district headquarters.

"We want to get World Trade Center steel from the Port Authority," said Tom Mastakouris, a commissioner with the department.

The plans are in the early stages according to Mastakouris, who said he hopes to be able to acquire the beam by early 2013.

South Farmingdale is working with other organizations to get photographs and information for an exhibit to be put in the lobby of district headquarters.

"We're going to to tell the story of what happened that day, and how it affected  us here in Farmingdale" said Masakouris.  They also want to honor "fallen firefighters in Nassau County," he said.

Mastakouris said he'd like to have a theme for the exhibit and is considering  an inscription President Obama  inscribed on a beam at the Freedom tower, which is being built at Ground Zero.

"We remember, we rebuild, we come back stronger!" the president wrote on the beam last month prior to signing it.

The commissioner said the district has to fill out paperwork in order to be eligible to receive the steel.
