Sunrise Crash Leads to Leandra's Law Arrest

Police: Mom overturns car with 6 year-old daughter.

A Massapequa woman driving drunk with her 6-year-old daughter, drifted off Sunrise Highway and crashed, police said.

Phyllis Lindberg , 49, was heading east on the highway near East Chestnut Street at 4:50 p.m. when she went off the road.

She struck a parked car causing her vehicle to overturn, police said.

Lindberg and the young girl were taken to the hospital for treatment of neck and back pain and the mother was placed under arrest. She had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.19 percent, which is more than twice the 0.08 BAC needed for a DWI arrest.

She was charged with aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child younger than 16 in a vehicle even if you're a first time offender.

Lindberg was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The daughter was released from the hospital to her father.
