We saw a high profile arrests, a strange twist to an accident story and a Massapequa couple accused of running an illicit business. There were many unusual moments this year in law enforcement.
Here's a look at the top police stories of 2013:
- A Massapequa Couple was accused of running an international prostitution ring.
- Police Commissioner Thomas Dale lost his job in December.
- A Wantagh man who was charged in a DWI crash on the Southern State Parkway in Msassapequa was convicted of manslaughter in the vehicle-related death of a Wantagh High School student 30-years earlier.
- A fire commissioner from New Hyde Park was arrested for allegedly assaulting a Massapequa man.
- The saga of missing Jones Beach Swimmer Raymond Roth continued into 2013, as he was arrested for allegedly impersonating a police officer just hours after pleading guilty to faking his own death.
- Roth's son Jonathan also landed in hot water again after he missed his sentencing.
- A Massapequa man accused in a fatal hit and run crash, had resigned as a high school gym teacher five years earlier amid allegations he had an affair with one of his students.
- It was a death that baffled authorities, but in the end Irene Luetje died of natural causes.
