Update: Off Duty Cop Injured

Arrest made in assault of cop following robbery at Burlington Coat Factory.

The man wanted for Wednesday's assault of an off duty police officer outside the Burlington Coat Factory on Sunrise Highway was arrested  Saturday morning, Nassau County police said.

Tyrone Stevens, 48, of Huntington Station, was picked up at 10:30 a.m. near the Tanger Outlet stores in Deer Park .   Suffolk County Police saw that his car had the same license plates as  the vehicle that fled the scene of Wednesday's robbery.

Stevens allegedly wheeled a cart  filled with nearly $1,500 in merchandise out of the coat factory  without paying, when he was spotted by the off-duty Nassau cop.  When the officer approached Stevens, the suspect tried to sell him the clothing, cops said.

The officer then identified himself as a cop and Stevens  allegedly punched him and knocked him to the ground, causing head and wrist injuries. After a struggle, Stevens fled but the officer was able to get the license plate number.

All of the merchandise was recovered. The injured officer was treated at an area hospital and later released.
