Weigh in on the Massapequa Fire Department

The Department is entering a new era. How are they doing.

The Massapequa Fire Department has been in the news quite a bit this week.

There was a changing of the guard at the Department this week as a new group of chiefs were sworn in. The new chief of department is Stephen Daresta.

The fire district was also subject to criticism as an audit by the state comptroller said there were problems with how the district handles claim vouchers and purchases. While there is no evidence the district approved improper claims or purchases, the comptroller made recommendations to ensure they're handled with more care.

With the department headed into a new era, we thought it would be a good time to get your thoughts on how you think the department is doing.

The Massapequa Fire Department does an excellent job. As someone already stated they do this job with no pay, running out at all hours of the day and night. It takes a dedicated person to do this job, and that's what they are dedicated..Ilah Tobin

Just to clarify.....They do get paid a pension after several years, free college tuition at Nassau CC, Discount on property and school taxes, free place to have parties, trips etc. MFD does a good job but their are perks.....

We are all grateful for the volunteers and the brave work they do for us. BUT let's be clear, the volunteers do receive perks (Not a pay check, they are compensated in other ways) as Ed mentions above, and I believe rightfully so, just want that out there. Additionally, just because it's a volunteer service, does not mean they are exempt from Government Review. There have been issues in the past regarding the amount of spend, and the transparancy of said spend. The people who support the Fire Dept budget with their taxes have a right to this and all financial information.

I've talk with a few members and each firehouse has to spend money on new tv's and renovations etc each year. if they don't spend the money they won't get it next year. This has to change.

Yes, they do help pay for college, but in return for every semester they give you money you have to give 2 years to the volunteer department that you are a member of. I am proud of the volunteers in our community, they give so much of themselves. They leave their family at all times of the day and night, family gatherings and holidays to help protect the community that they live in. They also have to go through rigorous training so that they are ready to face whatever danger they are called to.
