County To Name Preserve for Schmitt Saturday

Legislative leader from Massapequa to be honored.

Beginning Saturday, the Massapequa Preserve will forever stand as a living memorial to Peter Schmitt.

Nassau County is set to name the 423 acre preserve after the longtime legislator who died last year.

County executive Ed Mangano will be on hand for the dedication, along with Rep. Peter King, R-Seaford and dozens of other elected officials.

Schmitt's wife Lois will also be in attendance for the ceremony, which will also feature representatives of the Massapequa Association of Girl Scouts and the Massapequa Historical Society.

The dedication will take place at the intersection of Ocean Avenue Prospect Place at 10 a.m.

Schmitt was first elected to the County Legislature in 1995 and had been the presiding officer and Majority leader of the legislature from 2010 until his death.  He served as deputy presiding officer from 1996 to 1999.
