Engineers Work to Make Burns Park Safe

Park remains closed due to stadium light recall.

Engineers worked through the night checking stadium light poles in John J Burns Park after a nationwide recall of the poles forced officials to shut the park down Wednesday.

"Workers spent the night securing the poles and are doing forensic tests on them to see if there are any problems," said Jim Moriarity a spokesman for the Town of Oyster Bay.

The town closed the park after the Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall of more than 2,500 poles made by Whitco, a now defunct Texas company, because some of the poles have cracked and toppled over.

The town purchased eight poles from Whitco in 2003 that are being used in Burns Park.

Moriarity said he was "hopeful" that the situation could be resolved soon.
