Marjorie Post Park Hosting Summer Recreation Program

Now in its 47th year, the town program provides supervised summer recreation beginning July 2.

Registration for the Summer Recreation Program at Marjorie Post Park on Washington Avenue is underway, the 47th year of the summer activity program for local kids.

The program begins July 2 and is open to children ages 4-12, with groups broken into smaller age brackets. Town Councilman described it as "an exciting and affordable summer option.”

Children are placed into one of four age groups:

  • Early Childhood, 4-6
  • Juniors, 7-8
  • Intermediates, 9-10
  • Seniors, 11-12.

Depending upon the children’s ages, the program offers trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the 34th Annual Tobay Games.

Families who participated in last year’s program will receive a registration packet for this year’s program in the mail, town officials said.

Others can call the Recreation Division of the town’s Department of Parks at 797-4125 and a registration packet will be sent.

The program's fee is $175 for one child, $225 for two children, and $50 for each additional child within a family of more than two. The registration deadline is June 15, 2012.

In addition to the program at Marjorie Post Park , similar recreation programs are held each year at POB Community Park (Plainview), Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, and Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

The program begins Monday, July 2, and runs through Friday, Aug. 10, with no program on Independence Day, July 4. There are both morning and afternoon sessions each day and children may attend both. However, no supervision is provided between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Parents must make arrangements for their children during this time.

“Both parents and kids love the program," Pinto said. "We’ve watched many kids begin as participants in summer recreation and return later to spend summers working as counselors in the same program.”
