Massapequa Group Holds Education Rally

Long Island Progressive Coalition sends bus to Albany.

A group of parents, teachers and other education advocates held a rally outside the Massapequa offices of the Long Island Progressive Coalition Wednesday to kick off a bus trip to Albany where they joined in a statewide demonstration.

A group of about three dozen gathered outside the bus holding up signs calling on governor Cuomo and state lawmakers to reinvest in education.

"It's really important that we are out there getting ahead of the [school] budget proposals," said LIPC's Danielle Asher explaining why the group was headed to the state capital to join with other groups from around the state as part of the Educate NY Now campaign.

The group is calling for the removal of caps on state education aid and the state's new property tax cap.

"The cap in state aid and property taxes  combined are not an intelligent solution to a problem," said Richard Haas a teacher in the Half Hollow Hills school District, who addressed the rally.

"In fact, the problem our elected leaders have created are in their work is far greater than any they may have alleviated."

Haas said that education policy can have long term and far reaching effects in the future.

"To put it simply, if you starve our kids today, they will starve you back tomorrow," he said.

The group is also pushing for full day Kindergarten and pre-school throughout the state.

LIPC said they will plan further demonstrations once the legislature reconvenes next month.

Um...I didn't read anything about longer days/year. If we REALLY want to catch-up, we must start the dialogue. I believe it's time that our schools become true institutions of learning, instead of "play dates." I see this too much in Fairfield School in Massapequa. I graduated from there in '59; my son graduated from there; I had two gradchildren attend there (they are now in their 20s); and I do have to more grandchildren attending Fairfield. Every week, I read about other local schools in our district who have outstanding academic programs...nothing about Fairfield. I don't get it--yet the teachers moan & groan about how "hard" they work. It seems there's a party there every week! Let's get real with education. We all pay exhorbitant taxes and our children should receive better services.

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
