Massapequa Man Found Guillty in LIRR Wire Theft

Michael Carsten faces one

A Massapequa man was found guilty  in a plot to steal $250,000 worth of copper wire belonging to the Long Island Rail Road.

Michael Carsten, a former LIRR signalman , was found guilty on  two counts of Conspiracy in the 5th Degree.

He was among 17 people charged in the crime.  The stolen wire was lifted from scrap bins in Nassau, Brooklyn, Queens and Suffolk between 2010, and 2013, prosecutors said.
It was needed for signal communications and electrical transmission.

Using LIRR trucks to transport the wire to their own personal vehicles the thieves  sold the stolen material for a total of $253,694.

Carsten faces a maximum sentence of a year in jail when he's sentenced in January.
