Massapequa's Most Crater-Filled Road

You told us to check out Brooklyn Avenue for potholes. There's a lot to fill.

When you think of Massapequa, you usually think of pristine tree-lined streets that exemplify the suburban ideal.

But there are some areas that are zoned for more industrial uses where the driving conditions are less than ideal.

When we asked you to tell us where there are pothole problems in Massapequa, you pointed to one of these areas.

"The entire length of Brooklyn Avenue from Hicksville Road to Seaford Avenue," wrote one of our commenters. "This Road is so bad, it forces truck traffic onto local residential streets...They are starting to show wear also."

A Patch reporter surveyed Brooklyn Avenue on Friday and saw numerous potholes along the street.

That comes as no surprise to the businesses that occupy the area.

"We have potholes on top of potholes" laughed one employee of Massapequa Auto Body, who asked that his name be withheld.

The employee siad that officials from the Town of Oyster Bay Highway Department usually come to fill in potholes once a year, but that in several decades working on Brooklyn Avenue, he couldn't recall seeing the street being completely repaired.

But he said that he has some reservations about what would happen if the street were to be repaired.

"Sure I'd like to see it fixed," he said. "My fear is if they're shutting us down, while they're repairing the street."

Phyllis Barry, a spokeswoman from the Town of Oyster Bay said they respond quickly to pothole complaints.

“We get a crew out within 24 hours,” Barry said. “Depending on what is needed, we either repair the pothole immediately we get what’s called a ‘hot box.’”

A hot box keeps asphalt warm so the repairs last longer.

Barry says that pothole reports have been down in the town this year, due to the mild weather and that there’s no pothole season in Oyster Bay.

“We fill in potholes immediately, year-round regardless of season,” she said.

All repairs are made by the Town of Oyster Bay Highway Department.
