Massapequa Summer Guide

You can have fun all season without ever leaving home.

So summer has officially kicked off, the kids are wrapping up school and you don't want an early case of the summer doldrums.  

Not to worry.  You can have a summer of fun, sun, movies, celebrations and even a little disco, all without ever leaving Massapequa.

You can get things started Saturday with free Irish music at Brady Park. The Willy Lynch Band will be performing at 7 p.m.  along with step dancers and the Tara Pipe and Drums of Massapequa.

Then, you can burn off the Irish soda the next day by returning to Brady Park for a 5k run  sponsored by the Massapequa Road Runners at 5 p.m.

Celebrate our nation's 234th birthday the following weekend by attending a fireworks display after sunset Saturday July 3rd at Mansfield Park in Massapequa Park. The next day the village will host its annual Independence Day Parade at 11 a.m.

On Tuesday July 6, you can take that polyester suit out of storage. The Town of Oyster Bay kicks off its annual Music Under the Stars series with  a "Disco Explosion Concert." All of the the Music Under the Stars events take place at 8 p.m.  at John J. Burns Park. The concert will feature Alisha, Maxine Nightengale and Taveres.

The fun continues at Burns Park at  1 p.m. on Saturday June 10, with the Children's Fesitval And Safety Day. There will be food, bouncers and entertainment, as well as safety displays from police and fire officials and other public agencies.

The South Shore goes West Coast on  Tuesday July 13 as Music Under The Stars presents former Beach Boy Al Jardine's Endless Summer Band.

Then it's time for a dazzling Grucci fireworks display and a patriotic display on July 17 for "A Salute to America." Country music band Six Gun will be on hand as well as 4 Troops, a music group made up of American soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Burns Park show gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

Music of the '60s will be  featured on July 20, as  Music Under the Stars turns Fab with the cast of Beatlemania and also features The Boys in Concert which includes cast members of the Broadway show "Jersey Boys." They will be singing hits from The Four Seasons and other groups of the era.

The "Movies by Moonlight"series gets underway on Thursday July 22 with the Dustin Hoffman comedy, "Tootsie" at Marjorie Post Park at 8:30 p.m.

Feliz Cavaliere's Rascals will bring some good lovin' to Burns Park when  Music Under the Stars  returns on July 24.  The series continues on July 27 with Linda Eder singing Broadway standards and more.

A Doo Wop Extravaganza is on tap for the July 31 Music Under the Stars event which features the music of The Chiffons, The Crests, Johnny Dee and the Starlighters, as well as Bobby Valli and David Brigati.

Tobay Beach is the setting for a concert by Billy Joel tribute band "Big Shot" on August 3rd at 8p.m.

Irish Singer Andy Cooney co-headlines the final Music Under the Stars event with Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers on Saturday August 7.

Movies by Moonlight wraps up with the hit animated feature "How to Train Your Dragon," August 10, at 8:30 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park.

So get some beach chairs and blankets and stock up on sunscreen there's a lot to do this season.
