Varsity Grill Opens After Green Light From Village

Local eatery opens doors after complying with village requests.

After a brief shutdown for not being up to code, The Massapequa Varsity Grill has opened its doors.

Co-owner Louis "Bud" Ambrosio said said the business opened on Friday after receiving an OK from the Village.

The Village stepped in after it was determined that the business had not provided the documentation needed to open the business.

“The hold-up was compliance,” Altadonna said after Monday's Village Board meeting. “There were a few outstanding certificates that they needed to provide, and as soon as they provided them, we granted them a Certificate of Occupancy.”

Ambrosio said he met with the mayor and Village officials and said that they came to an "amicable agreement."

"I told [Mayor Altadonna] that he'd have everything he'd need in a week," Ambosio said. "I was able to do that on time."

Altadonna said that once everything was in order, the Village was only too happy to welcome a new business into the neighborhood; such a thing, he noted, benefits everyone involved.

“Any time there’s a new business in our community, we wish them well, and we hope they do well...we’re hoping that it brings more people to Massapequa Park.”

Ambrosio said Friday was "a soft opening," saying "we're tweaking some menu items."

The co-owner says he expects to have an official opening sometime in February.

Meanwhile, the  Board also voted to refer a study of Village Parking Lot Number Three to the Planning Commission, with specific reference being paid to loading zones, fire zones, and the placement of dumpsters.

“Parking Lot Number Three is located behind The Buttered Bagel store and Varsity Grill on Merrick Road,” he said. “We’re going to look at it and try and clean it up a little bit, so we’re referring it to the Planning Commission.”

The Board also voted to give permission to the Massapequa International Little League to conduct their annual Opening day Parade through the Village on Saturday, April 13.
