Mejias to Face Media

Democratic State Senate candidate announces press conference amid signs of weakening support.

Democrat Dave Mejias will hold a press conference Thursday amid signs that his support may be eroding following his arrest last week for allegedly stalking his ex-girlfriend.

It wasn't immediately known what Mejias, who's running for a the State Senate seat currently held by Republican Kemp Hannon, will say when he meets the media in Farmingdale, but the announcement came as his support among fellow Democrats appeared to be weakening.

Francesca Carlow, Mejias' opponent in the Democratic primary received the endorsement of  the New York State Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Wednesday.

Carlow, a Plainview businesswoman said she has not heard from any top party leaders or from the Mejias campaign about what they plan to announce on Wednesday.

"It's up to my opponent to address his own legal problem," she said.

Carlow has called upon Mejias to drop his campaign in the days after the arrest.

But even if he were to do so, Mejias would remain on the ballot, in the district, which includes parts of Massapequa, since the deadline to be removed has passed.

Police say Mejias  followed his ex-girlfriend, forced her car to stop and began screaming at her on Piping Rock Road in Matinecock.  After being arraigned on misdemeanor stalking, menacing and reckless endangerment charges, Mejias issued a statement saying he was cooperating with law enforcement and expected to be "fully exonerated."
