Part of Westbound Ocean Parkway Closed Until Late March

Roadway is closed to westbound motorists between the Wantagh State Parkway and Meadowbrook Parkway due to reconstruction of a pedestrian tunnel at Jones Beach.

The westbound Ocean Parkway has been closed to motorists between the Wantagh State Parkway (WSP) and Meadowbrook Parkway (MSP) until the end of March due to reconstruction of a pedestrian tunnel at Jones Beach.

New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said the pedestrian tunnel being worked on is between Jones Beach Parking Field 4 and the central mall. The project will eventually result in eastbound traffic also being detoured. The reconstruction of the pedestrian tunnel is expected to be completed by Memorial Day weekend.

Local emergency service providers and officials have been notified of the road closure.

Westbound Ocean Parkway motorists are being detoured onto the northbound WSP to the turnaround south of the Jones Beach toll booths to Bay Parkway westbound to the MSP. Southbound WSP motorists are being detoured to Bay Parkway westbound to the MSP. Eastbound Ocean Parkway motorists are unaffected by this closure, DOT officials said.

Motorists are being warned in advance of the closures via electronic roadway signs but westbound Ocean Parkway motorists are urged to use alternate routes, such as Sunrise Highway or Southern State Parkway to avoid delays.  For 24/7 up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org.
