Peter Schmitt to be Buried Monday

Funeral mass for long time Nassau Legislator to be held in Massapequa

Legislator Peter Schmitt will be laid to rest here in Massapequa.

The longtime county lawmaker, who died of a sudden heart attack Wednesday  will be buried in the cemetery at Old Grace Church on Merrick Road, Monday, according to a spokesman for legislative Republicans.

There will be a funeral mass at St. Rose of Lima at 11 a.m. Monday.

It will be a public service, as will the wake which has been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Massapequa Funeral Home's south chapel. 

Viewing hours will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7p.m. to 9 p.m. on both days.

Meanwhile County Executive Ed Mangano has ordered flags on all county buildings to fly at half staff until Tuesday.

Schmitt's death leaves the legislature deadlocked at nine Democrats and 9 Republicans.

Upcoming legislative sessions have been canceled, the spokesman said. 

The County Executive must call an election within 30 days begining Thursday and the election must be held within 60 days.
