Standard requirements for post-Sandy home restoration have been waived, Town of Oyster Bay officials announced.
Massapequa residents rebuilding their homes after Sandy's destruction will be given a Letter of Authorization that allows them to begin work immediately, according to Supervisor John Venditto. No fees will be charged in the process.
Residents pleaded with Town officials in February to fix the complicated process of restoring homes while staying within conflicting guidelines.
While funds are ultimately distributed on the federal level, Oyster Bay officials say they are committed to streamlining the process at the local level.
Additional alterations were also released:
- Damage valued at over $10,000 require plans to be submitted by a licensed engineer.
- Damages over $20,000 require plans to be stamped and sealed by a licensed architect.
- Those needing plumbing or electrical work must have an inspection certificate for necessary repairs. Those repairs should be done by a licensed professional.
- No fees will be charged for those who want to raise their homes. General height restrictions do not apply and height of homes will be measures from the foundation plate. Fees will not be charged if homes are restored to their pre-storm conditions.
- Extensions and expansions are not covered under these new guidelines.

For residents who have already been charged fees for construction prior to this rule change, a letter can be sent to the Commissioner of Planning and Development requesting a refund.
“Throughout the duration of this devastating storm and the subsequent cleanup, the Town of Oyster Bay has been deeply and intricately involved in rescue, clean-up, restoration, outreach, and humanitarian aid efforts,” Venditto said. “Our Town highway and sanitation trucks have been a common sight in your community, working diligently and efficiently to gather storm debris and clear roadways. And we continue to be here for you today.”
