Schmitt Released from Hospital

Nassau County Legislative Majority Leader leaves after four-day stay.

Nassau Legislative Majority Leader Peter Schmitt, R-Massapequa, was released from the hospital Friday after a four-day stay.

The 60-year-old presiding officer of the Nassau Legislature was taken by ambulance Monday to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola after he was having difficulty breathing.

Doctors found fluid on Schmitt's lungs and ordered tests.

The problem was caused by interaction of medication, according to Schmitt's press secretary Christina Brennan, who said he was released from the hospital around noon Friday.

Schmitt, who was first elected to the County Legislature in 1995 and is serving his eighth term, is expected to be back at work on Monday, Brennan said.
