Sen. McCain and Long Island

The Arizona Senator and former presidential candidate poked fun at Long Island on the Senate floor. How do you feel?

Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, is in hot water with Long Islanders after dissing the area on the Senate floor Wednesday.

McCain, the GOP Presidential candidate, said during a debate over defense, “Last I checked, Long Island was part — albeit sometimes regrettably — part of the United States of America,” according to the Washington Post's 2chambers blog.

That drew a strong response from New York Sen. Charles Schumer. The Democrat reminded McCain in a tweet of the heroism of Long Islanders on 9/11 and asked for an apology.

McCain later took to the floor and said he was "sorry that at least one of my colleagues can't take a joke."
