Stop Sign Installation, School Bussing Covered at Village Board Meeting

Two future board meetings also re-scheduled.

A collection of concerned residents calling for Stop Signs to be set up on Broadway at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue made their wishes known at Monday's meeting of the Massapequa Park Village Board.

The residents looking for signs stopping both north and southbound traffic were pleased when the Village Board successfully and unanimously approved the request. Mayor James Altadonna felt that child safety was paramount for such a busy area of roadway.

"We're all happy up here that we could resolve this issue, especially for all the young children," he said.

During the Board meeting's public question and answer segment, several parents in attendance expressed frustration with the Massapequa school district's newly-to establish busing eligibility, which has left over 80 families now without school bus service. Many of these students must now walk across busy, four-lane Sunrise Highway to get to school, something that has parents up in arms.

While Altadonna  felt the problem might be more of a state issue, he assured the parents in the audience that he would look into the matter.

"There's not much I can do about this until I have all the facts," he said. "I will contact the school district and find out what I can about the situation and see what, if anything, the Village can do."

The Board also authorized the Auditor's Report of Village's Justice Court, as performed by the Certified Public Accounting firm of Skinnon, Faber, and Heck for the 2010/2011 Fiscal Year.

“We’re happy to report that the report came in with no errors,” Altadonna said. “Everything was fine and the way it should be.”

Altodonna also announced a re-scheduling of two future Village Board meetings.

The meeting scheduled for November 28 will now be held on November 30. while the meeting scheduled for December 19 has been moved to December 5 to accommodate hip surgery that Mayor Altadonna plans to undergo later in the month.

The Board also authorized the approval of a Business Cabaret License for the Irish Cottage, a bar located at 1010 Park Boulevard, and the purchase of geranium baskets for next year from Bayport Flowers, located at 940 Montauk Highway in Bayport.

The next regularly-scheduled meeting of the Massapequa Village Board is on Wednesday, November 30, at 8 p.m.
