Study: Two Massapequa Roads Among Area's Most Dangerous

Sunrise Highway cited as Nassau County's second most dangerous

new study from the Tri-State Transportation Campaign has named two major roads that run through Massapequa among the area's most dangerous.

Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road were both on the survey's "Most  Dangerous Roads," based on a survey of pedestrian deaths between 2008 and 2010.

Sunrise Highway in Nassau was tied with seven other roads as the sixth most dangerous in the area, while Merrick Road was in a group that finished 26th.

They were the second and third most dangerous roads in Nassau County behind a stretch of Hempstead Turnpike.

None of the fatalities that put Merrick Road on the Nassau County list, occurred in the Massapequa, while there was a pedestrian killed in March 2010 on Sunrise near Broadway and another one killed in Seaford near the Massapequa border.

Honestly, I think it has less to do with the roads and more to do with the drivers. Just the other day while on the road, I saw at least 3 people "driving" with one hand while holding their cell phones with the other. Infuriated, I drove alongside on of these jerks and honked and honked and honked. Not even a glance, nothing. How reassuring to know that the drivers out there are oblivious to their surroundings. I lived for 30 years in Manhattan, relatively unscathed, thank God. Since I moved back here 6 months ago, I have narrowly escaped certain death behind the wheel at least 10 times, due to dangerous, inconsiderate, reckless drivers. And to think, I can't even smoke outside because I may kill someone with my whiff of diluted second hand smoke. Pleeeeez!

I never see Nassau pd pull anyone over for a cellphone.people are going to keep doing it , because no one ever does anything to stop it from happening. Go past any of the schools in the morning and see how many people are driving while on the phone. Merrick rd is very busy and I just pasted Burns park and all the high school lacrosse players were walking and running across the street, maybe a pedestrian over pass their would be a great idea to build for the children's safety.

I think the cell phone issue is ridiculous. Just one more unneccesary law. Why can people eat drink smoke and do their make-up while driving, but talking on the phone is a problem. I've seen people reading while driving, but talking on the phone is illegal. The problem with our roads is plain and simple, poor drivers.

Susie you flying off the handle and doing that is a clear example of what's wrong with society. You are obviously not a police officer, so worry about your own job. And if you don't have one maybe try taking some anger management classes to work on your road rage. Cross at the cross walks, use common sense, and you'll make it across just fine

when you say elite do you mean the hard working people who have money? it's a matter of labels. youRead More call them elite..they call themselves hard workers. yes, some inherit money. but most of us work for it.
Michael Taustine June 16, 2013 at 09:01 pm
No, it has nothing to do with how hard you work. It's just that the elite one percenters are treatedRead More differently when they run afoul of the laws in this country. No one has been jailed for the corporate malfeasance that resulted in the financial crash of '08, in spite of the rules that were ignored or broken. Too big to fail is the order of the day. Meanwhile, petty frauds committed by poor and middle class are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Two Americas. The rule of law, unevenly applied, whether by race, or class, or economic station will result in the unraveling of society. We may well be seeing the beginnings of that now, as we've entered a new gilded age, where new robber barons are allowed to run roughshod over the lower classes. The very ideals of America are at stake, and we are letting them slide away.

Will the new Massapequa station platform be covered end-to-end as it is now? If it will only beRead More partially covered, like Seaford station, there are going to be a lot of cold, wet, unhappy commuters.
Patrick O'Hara June 12, 2013 at 04:14 pm
Mr. Coyote, The design plans only call for a canopy over certain parts of the station platform, likeRead More almost all of the other stations along the branch. The canopies will be primarily over the staircases, elevator, waiting room, and one other small section on the middle section of the platform between the elevator and east escalator.
