The Fight Over a Proposed Mall

A court decision could come down Monday which could impact a dispute over a proposed mall near the Long Island Expressway.

A State Supreme Court judge may rule as early as Monday on whether voters can weigh in on a battle over a proposed mall in Syosset.

The judge will rule if the wording of a proposed Aug. 20 referendum meets state standards. The court has already ruled that there are enough signatures on petitions to allow the vote.

If it goes forward, voters will decide if the Town of Oyster Bay's sale of land to Simon Property Group is valid.

Simon is a mall developer which owns the Walt Whitman Shops and Roosevelt Field malls.  They have been opposed to a plan by a rival developer, Taubman Company, who've been trying to build a mall on land it owns off Robbins Lane, next to the land the Town is trying to sell.

Town supervisor John Venditto has long been Taubman's proposed mall and said last week he will fight it as long as he's in office.

We want to know what you think. Should there be a mall in the area? Should voters have a say over the Town's land deal?
