Town to Host 'Family Football Night' In Massapequa

TOBAY NOTEBOOK: Interactive scrimmage with LIU Post players will allow fans to hear inside the huddle.

Football fans and those intrigued by the game's intricacies might love the town sponsored "Family Football Night" on Aug. 28.

The unique event, set for 7 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay's John J. Burns Park in Massapequa, will allow fans to go inside the game and experience football from a different perspective.

“Coaches of the LIU Post Pioneers have agreed to wear a microphone during the practice, giving attendees the feeling of being inside the huddle,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Attendees will discover some of the complex strategy and nuances that go into an NCAA football program.”

Admission is free to town residents, but all are encouraged to bring a can of food to be donated to Island Harvest.

The "miked-up" scrimmage will be preceded by a youth clinic featuring players and coaches from LIU Post, as well as a player barbeque, scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Oyster Festival's Primary Dock to be Repaired

In case you missed it, work is expected to begin immediately on Oyster Bay's western waterfront pier, a key component of the Oyster Festival.

The dock is structurally sound, but its railing and decking were damaged by Hurricane Sandy last year. The work is contained to replacing planking, boards and railings. The pier is expected to be shipshape in plenty of time for the annual October celebration, town officials said.

The town board awarded the contract to Woodstock Construction Group of Oyster Bay, whose bid was $185,130.

One Town, One Book Discussion is Thursday

The town's "One Town, One Book" summer reading program will be the focus of a book discussion and lecture Thursday, Aug. 15 in Syosset. That wonderful book is "Wonder," by R.J. Palacio. Read more about it here.

The event, facilitated by Anna Katsavos, Ph. D., Professor Emeritus at SUNY Nassau, Literature and Women’s studies, is at 7 p.m. at the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park Community Center, 7800 Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury.

The program, championed by Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, has included an essay contest for young people and a dramatic reading at the Plainview Library. The book is a remarkable insight in a disfigured young student and the young people around him.
