Village Warns Residents About Downed Trees

Mayor James Altadonna urges residents to stay clear of where trees may fall.

The Village of Massapequa Park was hit hard by downed trees and power lines last year when Irene struck the south shore and they're not taking any chances now that Patty is bearing down on the area.

"What we learned from Irene, was there were downed trees near houses, fortunately nobody was hurt," Mayor James Altadonna said Sunday.

But the mayor is urging village residents to reassess where they sleep during the storm if they have bedrooms that could be in the path of trees.

Residents who sleep on upper floors or in the path of where a tree might fall should consider sleeping elsewhere, the mayor said.

Altadonna said the Village held a meeting Friday to prepare for the storm's impact, and will have workers out throughout the event.

As of noon Sunday, the Village Board meeting scheduled for Monday evening was set to go on as scheduled, as the mayor pointed out that officials would be at Village Hall anyway.  Altadonna described Monday's agenda as "routine."

Massapequa schools will be closed on Monday.
