Weigh in on Police Precinct Vote

County Executive Ed Mangano postponed a vote on his controversial precinct reorganization plan. Was it the right move?

It's been an issue that's been hotly debated, ever since it was announced in January.

County Executive Ed Mangano's proposal to transform four of the county's precincts including the eighth Precinct in North Massapequa into community policing centers.

The remaining four precincts including Massapequa's seventh precinct would remain intact.

The Nassau County Legislature planned to vote on the proposal Monday. But that vote was postponed. Mangano announced that negotiations with police union officials who opposed the plan were ongoing.

But it was  also learned that Legis. Joseph Belesi, R-Farmingdale, who was believed to be a possible swing voter, had been hospitalized.

This left Republicans who hold a 10-9 majority in the legislature looking at the possibility that they couldn't control the vote.
