West Nile Spraying in Massapequa Thursday

County to conduct ground spraying in areas surrounding Massapequa Preserve

Nassau County will be conducting ground spraying in the Massapequas Thursday, health officials have announced.

The spraying will take place from 7 p.m. through 2 a.m. in areas surrounding the Massapequa preserve.

Spray trucks will work in an area bounded by Jerusalem Avenue on the north;Merrick Road on the south;the area stretching from Cartwight Boulevard to Broadway on the east and Hicksville Road on the west.

The Nassau County Health Department says the risk of adverse health affects from spraying is low, but  pregnant women and children, should remain inside during the spraying and for about 30 minutes afterwards.

You can minimize exposure by:

  • Keeping  windows and doors shut, setting air conditioners to re-circulate and turning window fans off.
  • Keeping children's toys indoors.
  • Keeping pets indoors, as well as their food, water dishes and toys.
  • Covering fishponds during the spray period.

Hope it does not kill the dragonflies that are eating all the Mosquitos down south of merrick. Would be a shame. What wonderful creatures.

Lots of dragonflies along Lake Shore Drive in the Park, too!

Are they recommending that we cover pools?

Excellent point.

I'm excited about the spraying. I've been bit more this year than the last 25 years combined!

To Susan b, On the spray can it states "guaranteed to kill mosquitos airborne, providing they are flying in a south-easterly direction, between 1 and 5 mph". Dragonflies are naturally exempt- they fly in a south-westerly direction, at a faster rate of speed. Other than that, get to bed early, close your windows, lock all doors, take 3 asprins, and sleep with your mouth closed. In the morning it will be all behind you.

Should we cover our vegetable crops to protect our organic produce?

Thank you on the update on the spraying for West Nile, I would also like to know if our garden should be covered. Does anyone know?
