You Decide: Consequences of the Tax Cap

The real estate tax cap has been criticized for being confusing and bringing unintended consequences. What do you think?

There has been a lot of news in Massapequa concerning the state real estate tax this week.

Officials at the Massapequa school district say that are facing the possibility of making about $4 million in cuts in large part because of the tax cap.

Meanwhile, the Village of Massapequa Park has voted to opt out of the two percent cap this year.

In both cases, officials have said that there's been confusion over the implications and consequences of the law. Village officials have said that they opted out of the cap to insure that no harm comes to Massapequa Park if their current budget calculations turn out to be incorrect.

We want to know what you think. Do you think the new law was designed properly or will it have unintended consequences?

We could do a lot to save money (lower school taxes) if we get rid of a lot of the administrators. What does a school superintendent do to merit his/her pay. Do we really need so many superintendents in Nassau and Suffolk counties? How can they justify their salary when you compare it with that of the NYC board of education head or the NYC police commissioner

Thats the thing, there is no way to tell. The town does well in sports, but so does Freeport. Don't confuse student accomplishments with accomplishments of the administrators. It is hard to calculate something like that, but that is why it is so dangerous. If everything was falling apart, we might not even know about it until all of them have retired with pensions and left us with a mess to clean up. Sorry to be Debbie Downer - but that's the way it is.
