MASSAPEQUA PHILHARMONIC PRESENTS VIOLINIST BENJAMIN BEILMAN PLAYING THE TCHAIKOVSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO
The Massapequa Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Guest Conductor, Zachary Schwartzman, opens its 28th season of FREE CONCERTS with violinist, Benjamin Beilman, performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on Saturday evening, October 16, 8:00PM, at the Berner Middle School, Carmans Mill Road, Massapequa, Long Island. The orchestral selections are Beethoven's Egmont Overture and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3 in A-Minor, The Scotch.
VIOLINIST BENJAMIN BEILMAN, now 20, was born in Washington, DC and later moved to Ann Arbor, MI. He started violin with the Suzuki method when he was 5 years old, and currently studies with Ida Kavafian at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he is pursing his Bachelor of Music Degree in violin performance. He previously studied with Almita and Roland Vamos at the Music Institute of Chicago. Mr. Beilman has already won several competitions including Grand Prize winner of the American String Teachers Association in 2007 and most recently, he was named First Prize winner of the Montreal International Music Competition in June 2010. He gave his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in 2009, and has also appeared as soloist with the Detroit, Toledo, and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestras as well as the L'Orchestre Metropolitan de Montreal. Mr. Beilman has been a featured artist at the Marlboro Festival since the age of 17 and will tour with "Musicians from Marlboro in the spring of 2011. He has appeared on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" and "From the Top", and the McGraw-Hill "Young Artists Showcase" on WQXR Radio in New York. Mr. Beilman is a 2007 Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a recipient of the Gold Award in Music from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.
The Massapequa Philharmonic is composed of about 70 local musicians and is one of the largest orchestras on Long Island. Guest Conductor Zachary Schwartzman, earned undergraduate degrees in East Asian Studies and Piano Performance from Oberlin College and the Oberlin Conservatory, and was awarded a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. He received a career development grant from the Bruno Walter Memorial Foundation in 2004. That same year, he joined the roster of conductors at the New York City Opera as Associate Conductor for Le Nozze di Figaro, and held that position the following season for The Mines of Sulphur. Mr. Schwartzman has been Assistant Conductor for eight productions at the Glimmerglass Opera, and has been a member of their music staff since 2003 . He has received credit as Assistant Conductor on opera recordings released by Naxos and Chandos Records for Hartke's The Greater Good and Bennett's The Mines of Sulphur. As conductor, his orchestral performances have been featured on NPR, including a national broadcast on "Performance Today". He has conducted in the United States, as well as in England, Brazil, and Bosnia.
