Massapequa School Election Guide

A look at issues and candidates in Tuesday's elections

Massapequa will vote on the future of their school district Tuesday as the vote on a proposed school budget as well as one seat on the school board.

The $186 million budget is up 1.49 percent over this year's budget. The tax levy increase is at 3.19 percent just under the New York state tax cap.

The spending plan includes the elimination of 35 teaching positions, which helped close a $6 million gap at the start of budget season. School officials have insisted that declining enrollment necessitated the layoffs.

The School Board election has been one of the most unusual in Massapequa history. It will be conducted entirely by write-in vote, as no candidate filed nominating petitions on time.

Incumbent Board Vice President Tim Taylor and former Board of Education President Christine Lupetin Perrino have announced that they will accept write in votes.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m.to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
