Massapequa Students Aid Sandy Victims

MHS collects donations for food pantry.

Massapequa High School students recently gave a busload of help to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Students manned a school bus outside the King Kullen at the Southgate shopping center and collected non-perishable food items, which were brought to the St. Rose of Lima od pantry.

The Stuff-A-Bus camppaign made another stop to pick up about 1,000 new toys that were donated by Pride Home Improvements of Massapequa.

"It was a pleasure to give back to the community,” Pride owner Joe Del Vicario said.

The toys were distributed to families hurt by the storm and  others in need.

“This was a great way to strengthen relationships within the community after such a traumatic experience,” said Michael Draper, a health teacher and advisor  to the high school's Senior Nation and the Ames Campus Renaissance Club, which organized the event.

"Traumatic events reawaken the human element. This experience was a wonderful way to teach our youth to become stewards of the community — not once in a while, but every day.”
