Massapequa Student's Recycling Idea Wins Hannon Competition

An Eastplain Elementary School student won first place in Sen. Kemp Hannon's "There Ought to Be a Law" competition.

Massapequa's Melody Gerard created the winning idea for a law that requires all towns to recycle cardboard.

Gerard said she came up with the idea "because it is the most commonly used material and it fills up landfills the quickest. I think this should be a law because my town recycles everything except cardboard.”

The competition called for ideas for new laws from fifth and sixth graders from Hannon's district.
