UPDATE: Pipe Bursts at East Lake Elementary School

After school and evening events canceled Tuesday.

A burst pipe atmade for a tricky return to the classrooms following a holiday weekend.

The school was open Tuesday and all day programs went on as scheduled, although some classes had to be moved to other rooms, according to Massapequa Superintendent Charles Sulc.

But after school and evening activities at the school have been canceled for the remainder of the week.

The burst pipe likely occurred because of the cold weather over the weekend, Sulc said.

The pipe was inside a wall and was part of the school's univent heating system, which leads directly into classrooms.

The school's maintenance staff immediately began repairs and some outside consultants were called in.  The extent of the damage was still being evaluated.
