Students Share Mixed Emotions Over Alleged Terrorist Threat

Massapequa High School students share their thoughts on arrest of fellow student.

There was a mix of fear and indifference among  students Wednesday, one day after one of their classmates allegedly made terrorist threats.

Police allege Ryan Bernhardt, 17, threatened to blow up the school at a nearby after-school hangout, on Tuesday.

Mike, a senior at the school, who declined to give his last name, said he was in the shop during the incident.

"I think he was just joking. He was a good, clean kid," said the 17-year-old, who classified Bernhardt as a loner with few friends.

"He was just misunderstood," he said.

Fellow senior, Erik, 17, said he believes it was blown out of proportion.

"He just said the wrong thing with the wrong person there at the wrong time," he said, adding that most students he's spoken to have similar sentiments.

"I've heard around school about it and it is a scary situation to be in," said Nicolette, 16.

While most students agreed that they don't think Bernhardt would have actually followed through with the threat, some believed he could have.

"He wasn't serious about it. I think he was just joking but I wouldn't put it past him [to do it]," said Dylan.

Students at the school said they noticed no extra security measures taken during school hours Wednesday.

Why not go the extra step and have the proper authorities to checkout the school, does anyone really think (unfortuantely) in today's world that is asking too much?

WITH THE HIGH TAXES THAT ARE PAID THERE YOU WOULD THINK THEY COULD CHECK IT OUT FOR THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN! OR ARE THE COPS TOO BUSY!

Resident with Real Concern for our Youth: REGARDING LAST COMMENT...ARE THE COPS TOO BUSY??? MAYBE THEY'RE WORKING ON THE REALISTIC ISSUE OF DRUG DEALING AND DRUG ABUSE IN MASSAPEQUA. OUR CHILDREN ARE STRONGLY AFFECTED BY THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. THE POINT ...TRULY, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING PLEASE SAY SOMETHING EVEN IF IT'S JUST A HUNCH. THE NEXT ADDICT MIGHT BE YOUR CHILD. IT'S A HORRIFYING DISEASE. PLEASE HELP PROTECT THEM.
