Weigh in on School Budget Adoption

The Massapequa School District is expected to adopt the 2012-2013 budget on Thursday. What are your thoughts?

We've reached the height of school budget season. The Massapequa School Board has held their four discussions about the $183 million spending plan, including the most recent meeting on Saturday.

The budget is scheduled to be adopted Thursday. It will include a tax increase that is under the new state tax law and will also include the elimination of 29 teaching positions.

We want to know your thoughts on this year's budget. Take our poll below, and weigh in with your comments.

They do not need to eliminate teaching positions. They need to bring the salaries, pension and medical benefits in line with the private sector as well as streamline their operations.

They also need to stop paying teachers extra salary for doing lunch duty, and stop paying teachers extra pay for chaperoning school-day field trips (besides the extra pay paid to the teacher for a field trip, a substitute teacher is hired/paid to sub for the teacher on the field trip, which equates to 2 extra days of salary expense due to the field trip).

The 29 teachers were cut to save every single program, every single trip for athletes, for ipads in the classroom, and to save administrators jobs, NOT to save tax payers money. Your taxes are going to be high anyway. Directly taking away from the education of our children is not saving anyone any money, it hurts us today, and hurts us in the future. The school budget is over $500,000,000. These 29 teachers make about half of one percent of the budget.

And why do we need two special education supervisors in each elementary school? This new structure was implemented for the 2010/2011 school year after Gail Notoro's demise. It certainly does not appear to have improved anything in Special Education. Way too many administrators!

I agree, It seems they cut teachers that work with our children.Do we really need the expense of so many administrators . Maybe cut back on the administration and hire part time workers. I know this would cut cuts and get the job done.

too many chiefs, highly paid.. picking on teachers that work with our children. Notice the teachers get the blame not the high paid administration. It time to correct this and cut back on the administration and get control over this highly paid waste.

Very well put, also look into so many chiefs . Do we really need so many administers???

Why Phil, not disagreeing, but what are your reasons?

We need new board members who will look past the information that is spoonfed to them by the administration. The teachers have direct contact with the students every day, not the administrators who left the classroom years ago in search of power and authority. The vast majority of administrators have no significant business background that would qualify them to make the kind of effective decisions that are needed in the face of the tax cap. They are too busy trying to move the pieces around to save themselves and their cohorts to hold on to jobs that overpay their worth. These are the things I would like to see addressed at the board meetings. Good luck to all the new candidates.

FYI teachers do not get paid extra for school day field trips. Over night yes. Please do not assume ask first.
