Coast Little League Tops Seaford For a Spot in the District Finals

Pair of early home runs push team to win. Seaford still alive in double elimination tournament.

The Massapequa Coast Little League 12-year-old Williamsport team got off to a quick start against Seaford on Saturday afternoon to pick up a 7-3 win and advance to the District 31 Little League Finals.

Because it was Seaford's first loss in the double elimination tournament, they will be entered losers half of the playoff bracket and will still have a chance at the championship against Coast to be played on Sunday, July 10.

“It was a great game against Seaford. The top of our lineup hit well today for us, which is always nice, and our number nine hitter got a home run as well,” said Massapequa Coast head coach Brian Schirmacher. “We have our ace going next game against whoever it is, so things are looking good.”

Dylan Nealis hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give Coast the early lead. In the next inning, Chris Keenan sent a three-run shot over the wall to extend his teams’ lead to 4-0. Nealis eventually scored on a Seaford throwing error to end the second inning ahead 5-0.

Brendan McGovern hit a single and scored on an error later in the bottom of the second inning to get Seaford on the board, down 5-1. Coast pitcher Teddy Turano continued to keep the opposing hitters at bay with a comfortable lead already on his side.

In the fourth, Coast started of the inning with three consecutive singles from Keenan, Nealis and Justin Schirmacher. Seaford made a change on the mound from Keith McHugh to Anthony Pristera, but Coast picked up two more runs on a walk with the bases loaded and a fielders’ choice to put the score at 7-1.

Seaford added a run in both the fifth and sixth on a walk and RBI double by Andrew Cain, but it was too little in the end as Coast advanced to another District title round and continue their run at another Long Island championship.

“Our guys did a great job, but Massapequa Coast is a great team, winning our District the last few years. We stayed with them but just came up short,” said Seaford head coach Jimmy Roell. “Hopefully we can win our next game and see them again in the finals.”

Coast will play either Seaford or another opponent still in the hunt in the championship next Sunday at 4 p.m. at Burns Park. They will have to be beaten twice in a row in order to be knocked out of the tournament.
