Town To Host NHL Winter Classic Viewing Party On New Year’s Day To Coincide With Public Skating Sessions At Its Ice Skating Center In Bethpage

The Town of Oyster Bay, which has partnered with the National Hockey League (NHL) to help promote grass roots hockey programming and youth enrichment in the Town of Oyster Bay, will be hosting an NHL Winter Classic Viewing Party on New Year's Day, January 1, 2011, at 1 p.m. to coincide with the day's public skating sessions at its Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, Stewart Avenue & Cherry Avenues, according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto.

The special event will include large projection screens at the rink showing the NHL's Winter Classic, which, this year, features Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals squaring off against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"The rivalry game will take place at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, but Town residents need only travel to Bethpage to get the full game experience," Supervisor Venditto said. "Anytime during the game, or in between periods, residents will be able to skate for themselves on our beautiful state-of-the-art ice rink. After skating for awhile, residents can go back to viewing the best players in the world, with a better appreciation for the incredible skill of these premiere athletes."

Supervisor Venditto said residents can look forward to a full day of fun that includes skating during the public session, watching the game and refreshments all day long.

"If you're seeking a healthy and exciting way to ring in the New Year, this is it," Supervisor Venditto said. "You can get plenty of exercise, burn off some extra calories gained from the holiday season, enjoy a great hockey game and spend relaxing quality time with the family. You will see people of all ages and abilities on our rinks, so feel free to join us for this quintessential winter experience."
