Farmingdale Girls Lacrosse Defeat Massapequa for Class A County Title

The Dalers won their sixth Nassau County title in a row over the Chiefs.

The Farmingdale girls lacrosse team prevailed once again to claim the Nassau County Class A title over Massapequa on Wednesday night at Hofstra University with a 17-10 win.

The top-seeded Dalers (16-1) pulled away late in the second half to top the second-seeded Chiefs (12-5) for their sixth County title in a row, all by way of defeating this same team in the final round.

Jamie Leone led Farmingdale with five goals and three assists and Kimberly Kolodny added three goals. Danielle Doherty and Kelsey O’Brien each scored three times in the season-ending loss for Massapequa.

Unlike during the regular season finale match up where Farmingdale and Massapequa kept close for the majority of the game, the Dalers wasted no time in taking a big lead early over the Chiefs. Farmingdale jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the first 12 minutes of the first half, bolstered by three goals from Kolodny.

Massapequa got on the board for the first time with a goal by Doherty at the 12:24 mark in the half. The Chiefs made the score 6-3 after goals from Madalyn Pimental and Kelsey O’Brien. However, the half wouldn’t end before Farmingdale put in three more goals, including two from Leone, past Christina Fiorinelli and the Chiefs defense to lead 9-3.

Rory Sadoff, Jacqueline Kennedy and Doherty helped get Massapequa off on the right foot as they combined to score four of the first five goals in the second half to cut the gap to 10-7. With a goal from Farmingdale’s Kelly McPartland, it sparked a game-changing run for the Dalers, as they scored six unanswered goals for the second time in the game.

Leading 16-7, Massapequa could only do so much as time ran off the clock. Despite conceding three goal in the closing minutes, Farmingdale did enough to come out on top of Class A for the sixth straight season.

Heroes: Jamie Leone put in a game-high five goals for Farmingdale to lead a convincing Dalers attack en route to the title.

“It is always a Farmingdale-Massapequa rivalry and it always means the most when we are here,” Leone said. “We have bigger goals than just this game. We want to win the Long Island title and get to States again.”

Turning Point: The big 6-0 run by Farmingdale midway through the second half after Massapequa cut the lead to 10-7 was the deciding point of the game.

Quotable: "Our seniors really rolled us to victory and their leadership in practice was a real treat as a coach to sit back and watch," Farmingdale head coach Shari Campbell said. "It was going to be a game of runs, capturing momentum and losing momentum and we were hoping to just have it at the end which we did."

"We talked about us beating ourselves and having too many turnovers. We had spurts of good opportunity, but we let them pull ahead again," Massapequa head coach Megan Zimmer said. "This is a great group of girls and I felt this was going to be the year, but I couldn't have asked more of them."

Bottom Line: Farmingdale has had Massapequa’s number for the last few years, topping them every time to claim the County title since 2006. Massapequa last won the title in 2005 when they took down this same Farmingdale team.

Key Stat: Farmingdale did not trail Massapequa for the entirety of the championship game.
